Impact of Dust on Spectral Distortion Measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background

چکیده

Spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are sensitive to energy injection by exotic physics in early universe. The proposed Primordial Inflation Explorer (PIXIE) mission has raw sensitivity provide meaningful limits on new physics, but only if foreground emission can be adequately modeled. We quantify impact interstellar dust Compton $y$ and $\mu$ measurements considering a range grain size distributions compositions constrained theoretical observational priors (Zelko & Finkbeiner 2020). find that PIXIE marginalize over modest number parameters still recover estimates, though with increased uncertainty. As more components included (synchrotron, free-free), estimates degrade, measurement sometimes considered for standard $\Lambda$CDM $2\times10^{-8}$ becomes infeasible without ancillary low-frequency information. An additional concern is absorption CMB monopole, subtle effect must included. one form model discrepancy error, finding error introduced fitting our medium modified blackbody too large spectral detectable. greatest challenge may infrared (CIB). extremely modeling choices CIB, biases expected assumptions.

Forecasting Foreground Impact on Cosmic Microwave Background Measurements

We explore the possible impact of galactic and extragalactic foregrounds on measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find that, given our present understanding of the foregrounds, they are unlikely to qualitatively affect the ability of the MAP and Planck satellites to determine the angular power spectrum of the CMB, the key statistic for constraining cosmological parameters. S...

Anisotropy Measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) is one of only a few physically observable remnants of the early Universe. Studies of the spectrum, polarization and spatial distribution of the CMB can potentially lead to a detailed understanding of the processes that took place in the early Universe. Many of the outstanding cosmological questions regarding the age, contents, future, and large scale dynam...

Systematic Distortion in Cosmic Microwave Background Maps

To minimize instrumentally induced systematic errors, cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy experiments measure temperature differences across the sky using paires of horn antennas, temperature map is recovered from temperature differences obtained in sky survey through a map-making procedure. To inspect and calibrate residual systematic errors in recovered temperature maps is important ...
